Duff Green Mansion in Vicksburg, Mississippi. An e Duff Green Mansion in Vicksburg, Mississippi. An elegant bed and breakfast in the heart of historic Vicksburg. Built in 1856 by Duff Green, a prosperous cotton broker, as a wedding present for his bride Mary Lake. The mansion was spared from destruction by clever negotiations by Mr. Green to allow the mansion to be used as a hospital for both the Union and Confederate wounded. The Green's lived in a cave near their home during the Siege of Vicksburg, where Mary gave birth to their son. I stayed in the Dixie Room which was originally the kitchen of the large home. During the war it was used as an operating room. The room is reportedly haunted by a soldier who is eternally searching for his missing arm. The only thing I experienced in the Dixie Room was a peaceful night's sleep. The next morning I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and a guided tour of the mansion by the gracious owner of the home. The Duff Green Mansion is a great place to stay during your tour of the south. Vicksburg is home of the Vicksburg National Battlefield and other historic Civil War sites.
